Over 3,100 Canines Restored
With Revolutionary PermaStay

KANSAS CITY. Mo (June 1) - It may It may be a Doberman Pincher, Boxer, Great Dane, German Shepherd or Chihuahua. Or, it can include any canine whose ear or ears should stand up straight but doesn't for one reason or another.

Enter Gregg Miller, president of CTI Corporation -creator of Neuticles for Pets-and 2005 IG Nobel Peace Prize winner for Medicine.

In 2011 Miller introduced a revolutionary ear implant which restores the pet's ear to a natural look -called PermaStay Ear Implantation. Considered revolutionary, the space-age implant which was five years in development has now restored over 3,100 pets Worldwide successfully.

Miller created the implant due to consumer demand.

"Almost every day I spoke to a pet owner who said 'you need to create a product that corrects broken or bent ears on pets"

After investigation, Miller said he discovered that a number of products had been created in decades past but were short-term attempts which not only failed to work but in most cases were inhumane.

Miller said PermaStay Ear Implants are not only humane but will last for the life of the pet.

Crafted with FDA medically approved surgical mesh, the implant consists of a 3” x 4” foundation. The mesh was specially created to be compatible with the sensitive tissue within the pets ear and to eliminate risk of migration of the implant within the ear once placed.

In the center of the mesh foundation is a specially designed “spine” which is made of FDA medically approved fluroplastic. The spine, which varies in length dependant on the size of the pet's ear, was painstakingly developed not create trauma inside the ear once placed. It features polished rounded edges and sides with micro holes strategically placed throughout the spine. A second layer of a surgical mesh is then sonic welded atop the spine which not only eliminates risk of inner ear trauma but allows for tissue growth within the spine and surrounding mesh. The tissue growth into the mesh adds even greater ear support over a short period of time.

Three sized implants are now available for any sized canine.

"PermaStay is light as a feather- the pet doesn't know it's there- and best of all it's normally undetectable once placed," Miller said.

Miller stressed that PermaStay not only restores the pets ears -but is instrumental in maintaining the pets health.

"Pet's whose ear's should stand up but do not are normally prone to ear infections as an erect ear allows air flow into the canal of the ear. When that air flow is obstructed the pet is at risk for ear infections and related medical issues."

PermaStay has an extensive listing of authorized participating facilities. Miller said it is important to have a veterinarian that has expertise in ears to implant the product. "Those vets with a passion and forte' in ears do a remarkable job and while its costs from $600 an ear for placement- plus the cost of the implant- most pet owners will agree its well worth it."

The indications for implanting PermaStay prosthetic implants are quite varied. As a general statement, incorrect ear posture of the erect eared breeds of dogs, is the most routine reason for its use. The most routine indication is to correct cartilage breaks or folds in post surgical ear trim situations. This occurs most commonly in Doberman Pinchers, but also in Great Danes and Boxers. It can occur in any breed of dog for many different reasons. To list a few: overall health of the dog, nutrition, genetic predisposition, weak cartilage, muscle/nerve control, trauma, and improper surgical procedure and/or aftercare. The results judged very pleasing by one owner or veterinarian may be judged very poor by another. Be aware that in severe trauma cases, inadequate blood supply may be a very important factor on the success of this implant surgery.

PermaStay is provided sterile by the manufacturer. Sterile technique is absolutely essential.

PermaStay is crafted from three parts:
    A) Surgical Mesh Foundation

The surgical mesh foundation is designed to provide support for the spine once implanted as the FDA medically approved material will allow tissue growth through the mesh.

    B) Fluroplastic Spine

The Fluroplastic spine is crafted to provide optimum support and tissue growth. The spine is carefully made with rounded edges and corners as to not create inner ear trauma once implanted. Multiple holes are strategically placed to allow tissue growth which will aid in ear support.

    C) Surgical Mesh Overlay

The Surgical Mesh Overlay is sonic welded atop the Fluroplastic spine to provide support, eliminate risk of potential trauma from the spine and to allow tissue growth which will provide added support.

The prognosis for good results improves with experience in ear trimming and aftercare, and of course; experience in installing PermaStay. This procedure should only be performed by a licensed veterinarian. A clear working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the canine ear is essentail. Utmost care in surgical principles and aseptic technique is required. Infection and complication risks are much higher when installing a prosthetic material than when doing a routine ear trim. The prognosis of success exceeds 95% when you carefully follow these principles and when the break or fold is located in the middle 50% of the ear concha.

Procedures for correcting improper carriage or break in the mid 50% of the affected ear concha.
    1. Clip hair and prepare the surgical area; extending the prepped area 4 to 5 cm onto the skin around the base of the ear.

    2. Place one or two sterile cotton balls into the ear canal.

    3. Make incision through skin and cartilage on the concave surface of the concha. Incision usually is parallel with the long axis of the ear. The incision should extend 2 to 3 cm both distal and proximal to the break in the cartilage. Blunt dissection of the subcutaneous fascial tissue connection between cartilage and skin (on the convex surface) should extend 1 to 3 cm around the entire incision peripherally. Note: Very little hemorrhage is expected; however, a clotting time should always be checked. Also withhold any aspirin 3 days before and after surgery. To avoid slight risk of mesh migration, suture corners of mesh with disolvable material.

    4. Close incision with simple horizontal mattress sutures- Vicryl-0 material.

    5. It is recommended that the ear be supported following placement of PermaStay for 21 to 30 days following the procedure with TempoStay Ear Supports or traditional taping. It is important during this timeframe not to create trauma to the ear as it may impede tissue growth into the mesh.

    6. The spine in the center of PermaStay can easily be removed after 90 days. The spine serves as a "crutch" at the onset but is no longer needed once tissue growth has occurred within the mesh. Eliminating the spine restores the ear to an absolute normal state and is now recommended.

    7. Removal of spine is very fast and simple. Simply make a 3/4" incision atop the spine and pull it out. PermaStay has been redesigned for removal ease.

As with routine ear trim surgery, proper aftercare is a very important part of improving the probability of good results. Edema, seroma, hematoma resulting in post operative swelling are more likely than with routine ear crop surgery. Broad spectrum antibiotics for 10 days and effective anti inflammatory medication (Rimadyl) is recommended three days prior to surgery and for up to seven days following the procedure. External application of additional apparatus for post op ear support is at the option of the surgeon but is recommended for up to 30 days.

Effective pain medication and or tranquilizers should be prescribed. Evaluate the surgery on day two or three and again at ten days. At this time, remove the sutures and determine if other aftercare or ear training apparatus is indicated.

Do not employ use of Elizabethan collars or other cone devices.

With proper overall evaluation of the animal’s health, good surgical skill and thorough post operative care, a very high percentile of these broken ears will stand very well, probability is 99%. This prognosis is with breaks in the 1 inch from the base of the scull and above.

PermaStay has proven to be over 99% non reactive to canine tissue in all previous tests and clinical uses. Successful installation should last the life of the canine without complications. Unsightly appearance of the prosthesis material is non-existent in most cases. Pet should be healthy prior to placement without any known allergies or low immunity. Removal of the spine is recommended after 90 days or longer. Veterinary assistance is readily available to surgeons with questions or concerns regarding any aspect the procedure.

3178 canines have been implanted with PermaStay.

1) Three canines have experienced a mesh migration. It is now advised that corners of the surgical mesh foundation and center of the implant be anchored with dissolvable sutures which last for 30 days or longer.

2) 87 canines have experienced mild to severe post operative fluid buildup in the ear due to placement trauma. 33 of the 87 canines required drainage of the ear while the remainder absorbed back into the body without drainage. Surgeons using laser technology have experienced little if any post operative swelling. It is highly recommended that the pet be placed on Rimadyl three days prior to surgery and for seven days following placement of PermaStay.

3) Three canines to date have experienced what appeared to be a post operative allergic reaction. Pets, prior to placement of PermaStay, should be of excellent health including immune system and not have any known allergies for one year prior to placement.

4) Four canine ears- where the break of fold was midway - were corrected with PermaStay but the fold reoccured below the implanted area.

5) While it is at the option of the surgeon, it is advised that post operative TempoStay Ear Supports or ear support be employed to allow tissue growth into the surgical mesh foundation for up to 30 days.

6) It is essential that surgeons implanting PermaStay have a proven success rate in ear cropping and ear restoration before attempting the implantation of PermaStay.
